Men’s Golf Finishes 12th Overall at 2018 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate

Kannapolis, N.C. – The Akron Zips men's golf finished 12th overall at the 2018 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate after carding a 299 (+15) final round score en route to a 905 (+53) tournament total at the par-71 The Club at Irish Creek course that spans 7,099 yards. on Sunday.
Clemson held on for the win, claiming the team title with an 859 (+7) team tally, while the Tigers' Turk Pettit earned medalist honors with a 4-under par 209 score. Indiana's Jake Brown placed runner-up with a 1-under par 212 ledger.
For Akron, junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) and senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) finished tied for 24th overall both finishing the 54-hole event with 220 (+7) scores. Morgan, who played as an individual, added a final round 76 (+5) to his 75 (+4) and career-low 69 (-2) performances.
Baylis led Akron's team scoring. He fired back-to-back 75 (+4) rounds after posting an opening round 1-under 70 effort. Baylis finished third for par scores, recording 41-of-54.
Junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) fired the Zips lowest final round score, a 2-over par 73. He opened the tournament with a 73 (+2) and added a second round 77 (+6) score for a 223 (+10) tournament total. Appleby finished tied for 40th place.
Junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) finished third for the Zips with a 227 (+14) tournament total after a final round 75 (+4). Grayson added rounds of 75 (+4) and 77 (+6) to his total for a 53rd place tie.
Freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden) and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) rounded out the Zips' scoring with 243 (+30) and 247 (+34) totals, respectively. Sunden finished tied for 78th with rounds of 78 (+7), 81 (+10), and 84 (+13), while McFarland ranked 87th with rounds of 86 (+15), 85 (+14), and 76 (+5).
The Mid-American Conference men's golf championships are next for the Zips. Akron will compete for the MAC title in a three-day, 72-hole format, starting on Friday, April 27 and concluding on Sunday, April 29th at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
