Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team travels to Fort Wayne, Ind. For the 2018 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships at Sycamore Hills Golf Club on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 27-29.
"This is the biggest tournament of the year, and one we always look forward to playing," head coach David Trainor said. "Our conference is very strong top to bottom, and I imagine everyone will come to Sycamore Hills ready to play. We have prepared well, and our team is looking forward to arriving at Fort Wayne and competing."
Ball State hosts this year's championship event, which is set for four rounds (72 holes) over three days, beginning on Friday. The Zips will play 36 holes on Friday, and take the course starting at 9:38 a.m. ET from the 10th tee and again at approximately 1:58 p.m. ET from the same location. The third and fourth rounds are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET starts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Fans can follow all the action live via GolfStat Live Scoring.
Akron makes its 26th appearance at the MAC Championships, and the Zips have placed in the Top 5 nine times, including two program-best second place finishes in 2007 and 2014. Akron finished sixth overall last season.
In 2016, Akron finished fifth overall, and senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) became the first Akron men's golfer in program history to win medalist honors at the Mid-American Conference Championship. Baylis carded a 4-under par 67 final round score en route to a 1-under par 283 stroke tournament win at the par 71, 6,712-yard Highland Meadows Golf Club. Baylis currently owns a second-best 73.55 stroke average in 10 events and 29 rounds played to date. Baylis placed tied for 19th overall in 2017 with a 300 (+12) tournament total.
The 2018 MAC Championships lineup for the Zips includes junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.), Baylis, junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio).
Grayson leads the squad into battle after posting a team-best 72.31 stroke average through 10 events and 29 rounds this season. He has led the Zips' scoring efforts in six events and will be making his third appearance at the MAC Championships. In his MAC Championship debut, Grayson finished 20th overall with a 300 (+16) 72-hole performance and followed with a 13th place finish 297 (+9) effort last season. Grayson is scheduled to tee off at 10:11 a.m.
Baylis enters his final MAC Championship event as Akron's No. 2 golfer, teeing off at 10:03 a.m., while Appleby makes his second league title appearance. Appleby currently ranks third in scoring for the Zips with a 75.11 stroke average and tied for 19th overall with a 300 (+12) in his Mac Championships debut. Appleby is scheduled to begin his round at 9:55 a.m. ET.
Rounding out the Zips' starting five are Morgan and McFarland. Both, Morgan and McFarland will be making their season finale debuts and are scheduled to tee off at 9:38 a.m. and 9:46 a.m. ET, respectively.
Morgan tied Baylis for the team's lowest score the last time out, carding a 220 (+7) score for a 24th place stalemate. He fired a career-low round score of 69 (-2) and owns a 75.73 stroke average in four events and 11 rounds played.
McFarland enters his first MAC Championships event with a 76.69 stroke average in nine events and 26 rounds played. He fired a career-low round score of 69 (-2) and 54-hole score of 215 (+2) this season.

Kent State is looking for its third straight MAC championship. The Golden Flashes defended their title last year, while Ball State was the runner-up. Kent State enters this year's event as the 22nd-ranked team in the country.
This year's field features the past three MAC individual champions -- Ball State's Johnny Watts (2015), who won as a freshman, Akron's George Baylis (2016) and Kent State's Gisli Sveinberggson (2017).
Kent State senior Ian Holt is the 19th-ranked player in the country and is one of four golfers in this year's field ranked among the top 150. He owns a 70.67 scoring average and four top-3 finishes this year, including a win at Minnesota's Gopher Invitational.
Miami's Patrick Flavin, who finished runner-up at last year's MAC Championships, has won a remarkable four times in 10 stroke play starts this year. He owns the Miami record with eight career tournament titles.
Flavin swept last summer's Illinois Open and Illinois Amateur championships, while Ball State's Michael Makris nearly pulled off the same feat in Indiana. Makris won the state amateur and finished third at the state open.
Numerous MAC individual champions from the recent past have gone on to play on the PGA Tour. Among them are major champion Ben Curtis and current tour players Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes.
The team and individual winners of the MAC Championships earn automatic berths into the NCAA Championships. Last year's MAC champion Kent State finished second at its NCAA Regional to advance to the NCAA Nationals.
The MAC Men's Golf Championships date back to 1947. This year's event will be just the sixth to be held in the state of Indiana and the first in the Fort Wayne area.
