AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's volleyball head coach Tom Hanna announced the addition of Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) and Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) to the Class of 2018 on Wednesday.
Â
Yaconis, a 6-0 middle blocker, is a 2017 first-team All-Conference and Academic All-Conference honoree from Batavia High School. Named the Batavia HS Player of the Year, she earned All-Tournament team honors at the President's Day Classic. A member of the Sports Performance Volleyball Club, Yaconis helped her club team to a third-place finish at the 2017 and the 2016 AAU Nationals.
Â
"Hannah is an experienced player coming from one of the top club programs in the country whose best volleyball is still in front of her," Hanna said. "The progress she's made in the last year physically has been impressive and combined with her high-level training will allow her to compete in our gym immediately."
Â
Kelly, a 6-0 right side hitter, is the 2017 All-Area Player of the Year and Northwest Herald Player of the Year. The two-time team captain from Crystal Lake Central High School was a second-team All-Area selection as a junior in 2016 and an Honorable Mention All-Area pick in 2014 and 2015. A member of the Sky High Volleyball Club, Kelly helped Crystal Lake Central to a third-place finish in the 2017 state tournament.
Â
"Megan will help bring depth and a physical presence to our program," Hanna said. "She's an effective attacker off one leg who will make us better on the right side and in the middle if needed. Megan will provide a number of options to our lineup that will be exciting to have at our disposal."
Â
The duo joins LS Jen Durra (Painsville, Ohio), RS Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio), and MB Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.), who committed to the Zips last November, as the Class of 2018.
Â
"The addition of Megan and Hannah to an already strong class will really help our program move forward in the next few seasons," Hanna added. "They both have high level club experience with two great programs in addition to their impressive high school careers. Megan and Hannah clearly help us as we continue to improve the athleticism and volleyball talent in our gym while both being high character individuals who are extremely strong in the classroom."
Â
Spring play continues on Friday, April 13, as Akron will play Cleveland State at the Eastside Volleyball Club at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Â
Akron volleyball opens the 2018 season against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, August 24, at the Titan Classic, co-hosted by Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
