Akron Golf Finishes 13th at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

Aiken, S.C. – The Akron Zips men's golf team entered today's final round 14th overall after yesterday's 36-hole 578 (+18) performance and moved up one spot with a 303 (+23) round at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.

Akron completed the 54-hole event with an 881 (+41) and 13th overall as Virginia won the team championship with an even-par 840 tournament total.

The Zips opened the tournament with rounds of 291 (+11) and 287 (+7) for the 18-over ledger. Despite the four-stroke improvement in round two, Akron fell from a 10th place tie to 14th overall.

Junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C) paced Akron's starting five with a Top 15 performance, tying for 14th overall with a 214 (+4) tournament total. He fired a 74 (+4) final round after opening the day with an even-par 140 stroke total. Grayson opened the 54-hole event with a 2-over par 72 effort and bounced back with a 2-under par 68 score. Grayson carded six birdies.

Senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) carded a 72 (+2) final round en route to a 222 (+12) total. He recorded nine birdies in 54 holes and posted scores of 73 (+3) and 77 (+7) in the two previous rounds to be tied at 48th overall.

Finishing third and fourth for Akron were junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) and freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden). Appleby recorded a 71-74-80 – 225 (+15) to finish tied for 61st overall, while Sunden was tied for 64th with a 71-75-80 - 226 (+16) total.

Rounding out the Zips' scoring was sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio). He finished 73rd overall with scores of 81-72-77 – 230 (+20).

Akron will be back in action in the Linger Longer Intercollegiate hosted by Mercer at Great Waters Golf Club. The three-day event spans Sunday-Tuesday, March 18-20.
