Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team traveled to Eatonton, Ga. for the 2018 Linger Longer Invitational scheduled for Sunday-Tuesday, March 18-20 at the Great Waters Golf Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee.
The 54-hole event consists of three consecutive 18-hole rounds to be played daily at by some of the most competitive college golf programs. Three-time LLI team champions, No. 2-ranked Alabama, defends returns to Reynolds Lake Oconee to defend their title against the strong field of competitors, including four-time LLI champion and last year's 3rd-place finisher, Georgia.
The remainder of the 16-team field includes host: Mercer, Akron, Augusta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Kennesaw State, Michigan, Middle Tennessee State, North Carolina-Greensboro, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Troy, and Virginia.
The Akron starting five consists of junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C), senior George Baylis (Ascot, England), junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio), freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden), and sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio).
The Zips are coming off a 13th place finish at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Akron completed the 54-hole event with an 881 (+41).
Grayson paced Akron's starting five with a Top 15 performance, tying for 14th overall with a 214 (+4) tournament total. Baylis followed with a 48th-place showing at 222 (+12), Appleby and Sunden finished third and fourth in scoring for the Zips with 225 (+15) and 226 (+16) totals. Rounding out the Zips' scoring was McFarland at 230 (+20) overall.
