Grayson Leads Wexford Intercollegiate, Zips 12th After two Rounds

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) fired an 8-under par 36-hole score for a three-stroke lead over the field at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate while the Zips carded a 598 (+22) two-round team total, ranking 12th overall on Monday.

Grayson enters the final round at the Wexford Plantation Course, a par 72 Arnold Palmer signature course that measures 6,913 yards in length, with a three-stroke advantage after improving six strokes from the initial 18 holes. Grayson finished the first 18 with a 2-under par 70 score and was tied for sixth overall.

He posted five consecutive even-par scores to open the round before falling one-stroke behind with a bogey on hole No. 6. After two pars, Grayson recorded back-to-back birdies, and recorded his third birdie two holes later. He finished the round with a fourth birdie and a second bogey to remain 2-under after 18 holes.

On the second 18, Grayson earned four par scores before carding four birdies in five holes, including three straight for a 4-under tally. He gave a stroke back on hole No. 17, but collected three more birdies in a four-hole stretch. Grayson ended the round with back-to-back pars en route to a 6-under par 66 total. For the day, Grayson fired 22 pars, 11 birdies, and three bogeys for an 8-under 136 two-round total.

Freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden) followed with a 152 (+8) tournament total. He opened with a 78 (+6) and tied for the 62nd position and moved up seven spots with a 74 (+2) to finish at 55th overall.

Senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) finished third in scoring for Akron with a 153 (+9) ledger on rounds of 78 (+6) and 75 (+3). Baylis is currently tied for 58th overall.

Rounding out the Zips' scoring were sophomore Euan Gill (Scotland) and junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) with 158 (+14) and 164 (+20) scores, respectively.

Collectively, the Zips finished the first round with a 304 (+16) and cut 10-strokes off their second-round performance for a 294 (+6) effort. The Zips are currently ranked 12th overall with a 598 (+22) six strokes behind the 11th place squad and host Francis Marion.

Final round action is slated to begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
