Women's Tennis Drops 6-1 Match at No. 35 Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 match at No. 35 Kansas State on Friday evening at the Body First Indoor Tennis Center.

The Zips (6-6 overall) won at No. 1 doubles as sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Carolina Costamagna and Margot Decker, 6-3. Decker is nationally ranked at No. 104. But the Wildcats (6-1 overall) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

"We saw continued growth again today," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "We put ourselves in position to win the doubles point, but fell just short, and we definitely had our opportunities during the singles portion on play. It's disappointing to see inexperience cost us matches, but as we continue to play matches like this, it will only help us get better."

In singles action, freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) lost her first match of the season (8-1 overall) with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 defeat to Rosanna Maffei at No 2 singles.

Once KSU clinched the match at 4-0, the remaining two singles matches played 8-game pro sets.

At No. 5 singles, Uljanov picked up Akron's only point with a 9-7 victory over Ines Mesquita.

"Anna did an outstanding job of playing smart tennis today, as this was without a doubt, the best match she has played all season," Padgett added. "Rita and Miruna played well, and I'm very proud of their effort, as well as everyone's effort today."

Akron visits UM Kansas (5-4 overall) on Saturday, Feb. 24, for a 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) match at the Plaza Tennis Center.
