KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In the battle of the kangaroos, the University of Akron women's tennis team concluded its road trip with a 5-2 win at Missouri-Kansas City at the Kansas City Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon.

"Difficult conditions today for us, but we managed to come away with a hard fought, and well-deserved win," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "I'm proud of the overall team effort today."

The Zips (7-6 overall) captured the doubles point over the Roos (5-5 overall) with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. At No. 1 doubles as sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina, 7-6 (4).

At No. 3 doubles, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) beat Thanushree Vale and Ioanna Lathouri, 6-4.

In singles action, Pedroso defeated Johnson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2.

At No. 3 singles, Knezevich battled Grechkina to a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory.

At No. 5 singles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) took care of Grace Ball, 6-3, 7-6 (2).

At No. 6 singles, Wolfe won in straight sets over Lathouri, 6-2, 6-0.

Akron returns home next weekend on Saturday, March 3, to host Oakland at 10 a.m. and Butler at 3 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
