AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team travels to Kansas for two non-conference matches this weekend.
Â
On Friday, Feb. 23, UA visits No. 35 Kansas State (5-1 overall) at 4 p.m. CT (5 p.m. ET) at the Body First Indoor Tennis Center in Manhattan, Kan. The Wildcats are led by freshman Margot Decker, who is nationally ranked at No. 104, at No. 1 singles. KSU will provide live stats for the match.
Â
On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Zips travel to UM Kansas City (5-4 overall) for a 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) match at the Plaza Tennis Center.
Â
"This weekend will once again test our team's mental and physical progress," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Kansas State is an exceptionally strong team, and Danielle has playing at an extremely high level, as usual. UMKC has one of the best men I've ever met coaching their team.  Kendell and his staff have once again put together am impressive group of young women that I know will compete hard and push us to our limits. We had a solid week of practice, and our team is motivated, so I expect us to play well."
In all-time series, these are the first meetings between Akron and Kansas State and UM Kansas City on the tennis courts.
Â
Last week, the Zips (6-5 overall) split a pair of home matches, falling to West Virginia, 5-2, and beating East Tennessee State, 5-2.
Â
Freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) remains undefeated in singles play. She stands a perfect 8-0 in singles action. Freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) is 4-2 in singles action this spring, playing the No. 3-5 positions.
Â
Vasilescu is also undefeated (5-0) in doubles action with partner junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia). Junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) are 2-0 at No. 3 doubles action this spring.
