NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional Up Next for Akron

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams will continue their postseason competition on Friday, Nov. 9, traveling to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 2018 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, hosted by Indiana State University at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
The women's 6-kilometer race will begin at 11:15 a.m., with the men's 10-kilometer race to follow at 12:15 p.m.
The meet serves as the qualification event for the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis.
The top two teams on both the men's and women's side on Friday will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. Following the nine regional meets across the country, 13 additional teams will earn at-large bids following a review of regular-season competition and finish at the regional championships. After teams have been determined, 36 additional individuals per gender are selected to compete at the national meet, including the top four finishers at each regional who are not a member of automatically-selected teams. Two additional at-large individuals will be selected by the committee.
The women's field will feature runners from 34 schools, including 10 from the Mid-American Conference in Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami University, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan.
Scheduled to compete for the Zips will be redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia), freshman Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio), junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio), senior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio), redshirt junior Elizabeth Mosier (Austintown, Ohio), sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Alyssa Thomas (Green, Ohio).
A year ago, in the women's 6K race, Andrews led the Zips' efforts turning in a team-best time of 22:11 to place 83rd, while Hess followed closely behind Andrews registering a time of 22:20 to finish 91st.
Rounding out Akron's scoring efforts was Scarton, sophomore Whitney Wendling (Lexington, Ohio) and Hannah Pineault as the trio posted times of 22:57, 23:49 and 24:03, respectively. Mosier capped the Zips' performances with a time of 24:05.
Collectively, the Zips placed 13th in the men's race 10K, while the Akron women's squad finished 22nd in the 6K.

Scheduled to compete for the Zips will be sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio), redshirt junior Tevin Brown (Toledo, Ohio), redshirt freshman Taylor Hopkins (Heath, Ohio), junior Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), redshirt sophomore Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio), junior Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) and freshman Jake Wickert (Medina, Ohio).
In 2017 in his final cross country race as a collegian, Garrett Crichlow was first across the line for the Zips' men's squad in a time of 32:08 to finish 50th.
Stricklen came across the finish line three seconds later in a time of 32:11 to place 53rd.
Akron also garnered scoring efforts from Migliozzi, redshirt junior Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio) and Ondash, as the trio recorded times of 32:38 (74th), 32:47 (83rd) and 33:34 (119th), respectively.
Bollam-Godbott and Nick Campbell rounded out Akron's performances with times of 34:14 (139th) and 34:30 (145th).
The Zips are coming off their efforts at the MAC Cross Country Championship on Oct. 27 in Toledo, Ohio, where the men's and women's cross country teams registered third- and eighth-place finishes on the strength of performances from Andrews and Brown.
Brown garnered second-team All-MAC accolades registering a career-best eighth-place finish in the men's 8K at the MAC Championships crossing the line in 24:46.20, while Andrews directed the efforts of the Zips' women's squad recording a team-best time of 21:33.30 in the women's 6K to earn a career-best 15th-place performance at the MAC Championships.
Migliozzi followed Brown across the line for the Akron men turning in a time of 25:03.09 to place 14th and earn second-team All-MAC honors for the second consecutive campaign.
The Zips received strong performances from the balance of their scoring contingent as Bollam-Godbott, Hopkins and Wickert placed 22nd, 28th and 29th, respectively, on the strength of times of 25:24.77, 25:32.93 and 25:33.17.
Rounding out Akron's efforts on the afternoon was Ondash and Stricklen, who crossed the line in 25:42.21 and 26:19.05.
Matching Brown with career-best finishes at the MAC Championships was Bollam-Godbott, Hopkins, Wickert and Ondash.
Andrews directed the efforts of the Zips' women's squad crossing the line in a team-best 21:33.30 to earn a career-best 15th-place performance at the MAC Championships.
Scarton was Akron's next finisher registering a time of 22:11.29 to place 31st.
Hess, Murray and Gurko rounded out the Zips' scoring performances recording times of 22:19.24, 22:27.59 and 22:37.59, respectively.
Completing Akron's efforts with times of 23:20.50, 23:33.33 and 23:43.13, respectively, was freshman Sydney Niekamp (Napoleon, Ohio), Wendling and senior Tarike Osuobeni (Columbus, Ohio).
Joining Andrews with career-best finishes at the MAC Championships was Scarton, Hess, Murray, Gurko, Thomas and Niekamp.
