Bridgeport, W.Va. – The Akron Zips climbed two spots on the final day of competition of the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational to finish tied for seventh overall at 308-303-301 – 912 (+48) on Tuesday.
On the final day of the tournament, the teams needed to complete round two before starting the final 18-hole round. Akron cut five strokes form the first-round score and dropped two more strokes in round three. The Zips moved from ninth to seventh as Junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) led the Zips scoring.
McFarland moved-up eight spots on the player leaderboard over the final 36-holes. He posted a pair of 73 (+1) scores and a 76 (+3) ledger to finish with a 222 (+6) tournament total. McFarland completed the 54-hole event ranked tied for 11th overall and recorded 32 par scores and nine birdies.
Senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed in scoring for Akron with a 226 (+10) total on rounds of 78 (+6), 73 (+1) and 75 (+3). Grayson finished tied for 21st overall with 27 pars and 10 birdies.
Redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) finished third I. team scoring and tied for 30th overall with a 228 (+12) performance. He improved by three strokes each round, scoring 79 (7), 76 (+4) and 73 (+1) for the tournament.
Freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and redshirt freshman Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) shared the 54th spot on the leaderboard at 236 (+20). Puente's scores counted to the team's total after firing a pair of 78 (+6) rounds mixed with an 80 (+8) round. Smith played as an individual and gathered 78 (+6), 82 (+10) and 76 (+3).
Rounding out the Zips scoring was sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden) with 82-80-80 – 242 (+26) scores.
West Virginia claimed the team title by 11 strokes, posting an 289-296-281 - 866 (+2). WVU's Max Sear earned medalist honors with a 6-under par 210 scores on rounds of 69 (-3), 72 (E) and 69 (-3).
