AKRON, Ohio – The No. 12 University of Akron rifle team topped John Jay on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.
The Zips tied their program record, which was set a week ago, as they outshot the Bulldogs by a score of 4,662-4,325.
Junior Lauryn Cinadr (Brunswick, Ohio) shot a team-best 591 in air rifle, improving her score from last week (590) by a point.
"Lauryn is one of the predictable and consistent rocks of our program," said head coach Newt Engle. "She works as hard or harder than anyone on the team which makes her finishing at the top of the leader board no accident."
With the support of freshman Antonio Gross (Webster, N.Y.), senior Rebecca Green (Coventry, R.I.), junior Cierra Terrizzi (Dallastown, Penn.) and sophomore Wyatt Openshaw (New Freedom, Pen.), who all fired scores in the upper 580's, the Akron air rifle team was unstoppable. Gross (589) and sophomore Allison Kleman (Circleville, Ohio), who scored 580, set new personal best air rifle performance marks.
Openshaw led the smallbore competition with a new personal best of 585. His score was just one-point shy of the program record at 586. Senior Caleb Lloyd (York, Penn.), Jackson and Gross all recorded a score of 577 to round out the top four for the Zips.
"I believe with total confidence this is just the beginning of what this team can do," Engle said.
Up next, Akron travels to compete at Navy in Annapolis, Md on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Zips will take on No. 11-ranked Navy and No. 9 NC State in a Great America Rifle Conference shootout. The contest will begin at 8:30 a.m.
