ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 10-ranked University of Akron rifle team dropped a pair of Great America Rifle Conference contests to No. 9 Navy and No. 13-ranked NC State in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Zips' score of 4,659 was topped by both Navy (4,676) and NC State (4,664). After smallbore competition Akron led the way with a new program-best score of 2,318.
Akron's smallbore squad was led by freshman Antonio Gross (Webster, N.Y.) who tied his personal-best score of 284.
"It is so cool to watch Andre perform as he seems to work effortlessly while we all know the level of concentration to perform at this level is immense," said head coach Newt Engle.
Gross was followed by sophomore Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) with 581 points and senior Caleb Lloyd (York, Pa.), who scored 579.
The deciding factor of the match came down to air rifle where Akron came up short with a team average of 2,341, while Navy and NC State fired scores of 2,363 and 2,351, respectively.
Once again, junior Lauryn Cinadr (Brunswick, Ohio) led the Zips in air rifle, increasing her score by yet another point, firing a 592. Cinadr's score tied for second overall amongst the three teams.
"Lauryn Cinadr just keeps hammering the center out of her air rifle targets at every single match," Engle sadi. "Inching closer and closer to perfection, the effort required to raise your score a whole point is a monumental task, but Cinadr doesn't look back and keeps on trudging forward with every single shot."
The Akron rifle team looks to continue to improve as it hosts the first weekend of the Zippy Open, Oct. 27-28. Akron will also host Nebraska and Moorhead State in a rare doubleheader, Nov. 3-4, before the second weekend of the Zippy Open, Nov. 10-11.
