ATHENS, Ohio – A back-and-forth battle between the Akron women's soccer team and the Ohio Bobcats resulted in a 0-0 double-overtime draw in a game that saw a combined 28 shots and 10 saves on Thursday afternoon in Athens, Ohio.Â
Â
"We gave another positive performance today. We were well in the game throughout and were well in control of possession," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "Unfortunately, we didn't score but we had a shutout and picked up a point to what's important! Most importantly the performance was there again and the players gave it everything."
Akron picks up their fourth point in the MAC standings with the result against Ohio.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Erin McKinney (Belvidere, Ill.) was phenomenal in the net for the Zips and was a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities. The Zips defensive backline was a major disruption for the Ohio offensive attack limiting the open opportunities for Ohio.Â
Â
On the offensive side of the ball for Akron, the Zips tallied 13 shots in the match to go with four shots on goal. Senior Shea O'Brien garnered a team-high three shots in the tilt, two of which landed on goal but pulled in for a save. Sophomore Lexie Kolano (Trafford, Pa.) chipped in a pair of shots for the Zips, while eight other Akron players posted one shot each.Â
Â
Freshman Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) attempted to get Akron on the scoreboard in just the second minute of the game. However, her attempt at the goal at the 1:14 mark was saved by Ohio's keeper, Sydney Malham.
Â
Ohio strung together four consecutive shots in a matter of six minutes (22:06-28:04). Despite the aggressive play, the Akron defense would come out on top not allowing a Bobcat goal.Â
After a back-and-forth first half, the Zips controlled the advantage in possession and into the overtime periods.
Â
In the OT periods, the Zips were looking to win the match and outshot Ohio 4-to-0 in extra time. The veteran O'Brien notched all three of her shots in overtime with two being pulled in for saves and taking the golden goal away from the Zips.Â
Â
At the end of 110 minutes of play, the score remained deadlocked at zero resulting in the draw. With the tie, Akron picks up its fourth point in the MAC standings.Â
Â
Akron returns to FirstEnergy Stadium and Cub Cadet Field on Sunday, Oct. 7, for the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge against cross-town rival, Kent State. The Zips and Golden Flashes are set to kick off at 1 p.m. The Akron women's soccer program will also celebrate its annual alumnae day as the Zips their welcome back former student-athletes back to campus.
