AKRON, Ohio – At the completion of the first of two weekends of the Zippy Open, the University of Akron rifle team is leading the pack in both air rifle and smallbore.
In air rifle, junior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D.) showed the initiative by posting a score of 590 out of the possible 600.
"I was glad to see this performance by Kaufman because she has been creeping up on greatness and now that she is over the 590 hump I expect she will never look back," said head coach Newt Engle. "However the air competition is always at Olympic levels when junior Lauryn Cinadr steps up to the line, only this time she landed in the close support position behind Kaufman with a 589. This is exactly what I was hoping the week before our match with Morehead and Nebraska."
The success continued for the Zips on the smallbore range. It started when junior Anthony Jackson (Seven Valleys, Pa.) jumped in the lead by posting a season high 579. Then on the very next relay junior Cierra Terrizzi (Dallastown, Pa.) topped her personal best score and pulled into the lead with a remarkable 581 out of 600.
"Both Terrizzi and Jackson have been working overtime on the ranges to improve their scores to benefit the team. Wow, did it pay off today," Engle said. "Yet again, this high level of performance is coming at a critical time with the big weekend matches coming up next weekend."
The last weekend of the Zippy Open will take place, Nov. 10-11, when the remaining members of the Akron squad will step up to the line along with approximately 130 other competitors. Matches run from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. each day and can be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/Zippy-Open-2018.
