AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team split a doubleheader this past weekend. On Saturday, Nov. 3, Akron topped Nebraska and Morehead State in a three-way match before falling to Nebraska, Sunday, Nov. 4, in a standard dual.
On Saturday, Akron fired a score of 4,660, just two points shy of the school record. However, the Zips' score was enough to defeat both Nebraska (4,654) and Morehead State (4,634).
Senior Caleb Lloyd (York, Pa.) was Akron's top shooter on the smallbore range, coming in second overall with a score of 582, while freshman Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.) recorded a score of 579 to place fourth.
Junior Kera Kaufman (Delmont, S.D.) took top gun honors in the air rifle competition with a score of 593. Following closely behind her was senior Rebecca Green (Coventry, R.I.) who recorded a score of 590, placing third overall.
In a rematch with Nebraska on Sunday, the Huskers topped Akron by a score of 4,666-4,636.
Gross shot Akron's top score at 582 in smallbore, which ranked fourth overall. Sophomore Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) was right behind him with 577.
Kaufman led the way for the Zips on the air rifle range for the second day in a row, placing third overall after improving her score to 587.
Akron will host its final weekend of the Zippy Open, Nov. 10-11. Action will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.
