AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's cross country teams will begin postseason competition on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.
The women's 6-kilometer race will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at noon. In addition to a pair of MAC Championships on the line, the Zips will be competing for two points in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge. Kent State leads 1.5-1.0 in the current standings.
The nine-team field in the men's championship includes squads from Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Ohio and Toledo. All 12 conference schools will be participating in the women's race.
A year ago, the Akron men garnered a fifth-place finish, while the Zips' women earned an 10th-place showing. Both squads earned a full point for Akron in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge.
The Akron men will be directed by a trio of returning individual scorers from the 2017 MAC Championship in juniors Marc Migliozzi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Nick Stricklen (Lexington, Ohio) along with redshirt junior Tevin Brown (Toledo, Ohio).
Migliozzi earned second-team All-MAC accolades on the strength of recording a personal-best time of 25:07.5 to finish 10th overall, while Stricklen and Brown posted times of 25:26.3 (25th) and 25:58.8 (45th), respectively.
Rounding out Akron's scoring efforts a year ago was redshirt junior Jeremiah Fitzgerald (Mantua, Ohio), who crossed the line in 26:00.4 (46th).
Also competing for the Zips in the 2017 league championship was sophomore Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) (26:20.9/57th), redshirt junior Nick Campbell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) (26:30.2/65th) and redshirt sophomore Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) (26:40.8/67th).
Migliozzi, Bollam-Godbott and Brown have been the Zips' top finishers in Akron's four races this fall, at the Tommy Evans Invitational (Migliozzi), John McNichols Invitational (Bollam-Godbott), All-Ohio Championships (Bollam-Godbott) and Penn State National (Brown).
The Zips' contingent of runners in the race this Saturday will include; Bollam-Godbott, Brown, redshirt freshman Taylor Hopkins (Heath, Ohio), Migliozzi, Ondash, Stricklen and freshman Jake Wickert (Medina, Ohio).
The Akron women will be led by a trio of returning individual scorers from the 2017 MAC Championship in redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia), junior Haley Hess (Curtice, Ohio) and sophomore Lindsey Scarton (Berea, Ohio).
In the women's 2017 race, Andrews covered the course in 22:06.7 to earn a 33rd-place finish. Hess and Scarton followed Andrews across the finish line for the Zips' women's squad recording times of 22:22.3 (43rd) and 22:57.3 (70th), respectively.
Completing Akron's scoring runners was senior Elizabeth Mosier (Austintown, Ohio) (23:02.3/72nd).
Also racing for the Zips in the championship was sophomore Whitney Wendling (Lexington, Ohio) (23:09.6/76th), redshirt sophomore Alyssa Thomas (Green, Ohio) (23:23.9/85th) and senior Tarike Osuobeni (Columbus, Ohio) (24:07.7/97th).
Andrews has been the Zips' top finisher in each of Akron's four races this fall, at the Tommy Evans Invitational, John McNichols Invitational, All-Ohio Championships and Penn State National.
The Zips' list of runners in the race this Saturday will include; Andrews, freshman Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio), Hess, senior Ashley Murray (Seville, Ohio), freshman Sydney Niekamp (Napoleon, Ohio), Osuobeni, Scarton, Thomas and Wendling.
Andrews and Brown and directed the efforts of the Zips' women's and men's cross country squads at the Penn State National on Oct. 12 in University Park, Pa., registering team-best times of 21:24 and 26:00, respectively.
The meet, which featured seven ranked men's and seven rated women's squads, saw the Zips' men team placed 16th, while the women's squad finished 23rd.
For the fourth time in as many races this season, Andrews was Akron's top finisher traversing the women's 6K course in a team-best time of 21:24.
Hess and Scarton were next across the line for the Zips posting times of 22:14 and 22:20, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring efforts for Akron was Thomas and Murray. Also competing for the Zips was Gurko and Osuobeni.
Brown was the Zips' top men's finisher for the first time this season registering a time of 26:00 in the 5.2-mile race to place 57th.
Akron got a solid effort from its scoring members as the team's spread between its Nos. 1 and 5 runners was 36 seconds.
Migliozzi posted a time of 26:08 to place 71st, while Bollam-Godbott, Hopkins and Wickert crossed the line in 26:23 (94th), 26:36 (109th) and 26:36 (110th), respectively.
Also competing for the Zips and recording times of 27:09 and 27:44 was Ondash and Stricklen.
Akron concludes its campaign traveling to Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 9.
