CLEVELAND, Ohio– After turning in back-to-back shutouts over two top tier Mid-American Conference teams, freshman goalkeeper Erin McKinney (Belvidere, Ill.) was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week, by the league office on Tuesday.Â
Â
Additionally, McKinney was also named the Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week by Zips Athletics.Â
Â
This past week, the Zips went up against the current top team in the MAC, Bowling Green, and the defending MAC Tournament champion, Toledo, to close out the home portion of the 2018 schedule.Â
Â
Heading into the contest with the Falcons, BG was unbeaten in league play (8-0-0) and averaged 2.07 goals per game. At FirstEnergy Stadium on Oct. 18, Bowling Green ran into a wall in McKinney and was shutout by the Zips keeper, along with the defensive backline. McKinney made 10 saves in the contest, which ties a season-high.Â
Â
Three days later against the reigning champions, McKinney again came up big against the Rockets posting another clean sheet while making three saves.Â
Â
The back-to-back shutouts were the first in McKinney's young career and she increased her MAC-leading save total to 88.Â
Â
Akron is back in action in Buffalo, N.Y., on Thursday, Oct. 25, for the 2018 regular season finale against Buffalo. The Zips postseason hopes remain alive heading into the match with the Bulls.Â
