Akron Volleyball Bested by Eastern Michigan, 3-0

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 14-25) match to Eastern Michigan on Saturday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Akron fell to 11-10 overall and 3-7 in Mid-American Conference action, while Eastern Michigan improved to 14-10 overall and 6-4 in the MAC.
Freshman Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) led the Zips offense, while tying her career high, with nine kills. Junior Elya Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) and senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) recorded six and five kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) posted 23 set assists, two block and two service aces on the night. Karsner held a team-best hitting clip of .429.
Sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) paced the Zips with 11 digs, while junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) and Kelly added a block apiece to Akron's defensive efforts.
Akron pulled ahead to a 7-3 advantage early in the opening set, the run was capped off with back-to-back kills from Kelly and a Weigand service ace. The Zips' lead didn't last long as several runs would give the Eagles an 18-11 advantage. Akron wouldn't come closer than six points for the rest of the set, resulting in a 25-17 first set win for EMU.
Eastern Michigan carried its momentum into set two, outscoring the Zips 6-2 before the first timeout was called. Akron saw several short runs throughout the set including a late 3-0 run highlighted by kills from Kelly and Richardson to cut the deficit to five points. A kill from EMU's Cassie Haut capped off a 25-18 second set win for the Eagles.
A 6-0 rally to begin the third set helped to lift EMU to an 11-2 advantage. The Zips scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the Eagles lead to just three points. Akron's run included kills from Karsner, Richardson, Weigand and freshman Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio). Eastern Michigan, however, outscored the Zips 12-4 for the remainder of the set, sealing its win with a 25-14 victory in the final set.
Akron returns to the road, traveling to MAC East leaders, Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) next weekend. The Zips and the Falcons will face off in Bowling Green, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. Akron will then head to Oxford, Ohio for a 5 p.m. tilt against Miami on Saturday, Oct. 27.
