BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 17-25, 19-25) Mid-American Conference contest to Bowling Green on Friday evening in Bowling Green, Ohio.
"Tonight, we ran into a good team," said head coach Tom Hanna. "We had enough moments where we did some good things and played at a high level but we couldn't string enough of them together."
The Zips fell to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in MAC play, while the Falcons improved to 15-9, 9-2 MAC.
Akron was led on offense by senior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) with eight kills. Sophomore setter Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) recorded 19 set assists, while also posting four blocks and one service ace.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) paced the Zips with 14 digs, while Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) added 12 digs. Junior Ashley Richardson (Doylestown, Ohio) led Akron with six total blocks.
The Zips held an 8-6 edge in blocks over the Falcons.
In the opening set, Bowling Green got off to an early 10-3 lead. Akron had a few short runs throughout the match but wasn't able to overcome the deficit, falling 25-16 in the first set.
Kills by Gwozdz gave Akron an early 2-0 lead to begin set two. However, BGSU scored 10 unanswered points to take a significant lead at, 12-2. The Zips had a late three-point run but a kill by Bowling Green's Jessi Holly, sealed a second set win for the Falcons with a score of 25-17.
Bowling Green was leading 10-7 into the third set, when a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Kill from Adleta, tied the set at 10-all. However, the Falcons regained their lead en route to a 25-19 final set win.
Akron is back in action tomorrow against MAC East leader, Miami, in Oxford, Ohio at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
