Zips Swimming and Diving Wins the Akron Zips Classic

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's swimming and diving team defended its home pool and captured the crown after two days of competition at the first ever Akron Zips Classic at Ocasek Natatorium, Oct. 12-13.
At the conclusion of the two day meet, the Zips won the women's field with a total of 1,259.5 points, followed by Miami in second with 983 points and Cincinnati totaled 465.5 points to take third.
On the men's side of competition, Miami won overall with 1,079 points followed by Cincinnati (762.5) and Cleveland State (603.5).
The Zips began the morning session taking the top two finishes in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of freshmen Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and freshman Sofia Henell, along with seniors Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) and Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) clocked in at a time of 1:31.51.
Junior Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) captured the first individual event of the day with a time of 4:22.35 in the 400 individual medley. Freshman Olivia Gardner (Redditch, England) recorded a third-place finish in the event as well.
In addition to playing a role in Akron's relay success, senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) earned first place in the 50 freestyle (23.02), 100 backstroke (54.28) and 200 butterfly (2:00.85).
Sophomore Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) earned individual top honors on day two in the 100 butterfly. Watson recorded a second place finish in the 100 butterfly, while tying for first place with teammate, Engel, in the 100 freestyle at a time of 50.11.
Henell touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.08. Additionally, she placed third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.58. Sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.47) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.64).
The 200 medley relay team of freshmen Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia), Andrea Fischer (St. Paul, Minn.) and Henell, alongside sophomore Nogaj, turned in a top time of 1:42.22 to open the final session of the meet, Saturday evening.
Sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) took third in the mile with a time of 17:00.51, while freshman Mckenzie Rice (Fairfield, Ohio) placed fourth (17:11.00).
Movold continued to shine in her collegiate debut as she touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:57.90.
In the final event of the night, Watson, Fazekas, Henell and Engel placed first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:19.91.
Over the course of three sessions, Akron won all five relays and also took first in 11 of the 13 individual events.
The Zips return to action, Oct. 26, as it hosts Buffalo in a dual at 5 p.m. The meet will be broadcast on ESPN3.
