AKRON, Ohio – The No. 22-ranked University of Akron Swimming and Diving team edged Buffalo in the first Mid-American Conference dual of the season, 164-136, on Friday evening at Ocasek Natatorium.
The 200 Medley relay team of senior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), sophomore Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain), and freshmen Sarah Watson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Sofia Henell (Linkoping, Sweden) got a quick start off the blocks to begin the meet, turning in a first place time of 1:42.44. Buffalo's B and A relay teams took second and third, respectively.
Buffalo's Brittney Beetcher finished first in the 1000 freestyle, while Akron freshman Avery Movold (Prince George, British Columbia) touch the wall second with a time of 10:12.40. Sophomore Brooke Lamoureux (Belleville, Ontario) wasn't far behind placing third in a time of 10:12.70.
In the 200 freestyle event, Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) placed first clocking in with a time of 1:51.87.
The Bulls took the top times in the next two events including the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke. However, Akron did own second in each event with Fazekas touching the wall in a time of 55.51 in the backstroke and Garcia in the breaststroke with a time of 1:04.62.
Junior Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Calif.) swam to a victory in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:03.73. Junior Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) earned a third place finish at 2:03.78.
Buffalo found itself on top in the 50 freestyle, with Katie Burns touching first for the Bulls. Watson earned four points for the Zips with a second place finish in a time of 23.56.
On the boards, the Bulls' Olivia Gosselin took first in the one-meter dive with 268.50 points. Akron senior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) took second with a score of 265.58.
After the first eight events, Buffalo held a 78-72 edge over the Zips.
Buffalo's Katie Burns took first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.72. The Zips earned seven team points with Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio) and Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) taking second and third, respectively.
Akron won the next two swimming events, with Movold touching the wall in a time of 1:59.10 in the 200 backstroke and Garcia clocking in at 2:19.55 in the 200 breaststroke.
The Bulls interrupted the Zips run, taking first in the 500 freestyle. However, Akron took the top two spots in the 100 butterfly with Nogaj (53.92) and Watson (54.40) placing first and second, respectively.
Akron regained the lead, 128-117, heading into the three-meter dive.
Crail's 285.15 points in the in the three-meter dive earned her first place as well as nine team points for the Zips.
Nogaj's time of 2:03.39 in the individual medley marked her third individual win of the night.
In a neck-and-neck 200 freestyle relay race, Akron's A relay team of Watson, Henell, Engel and Fazekas took first with a time of 1:32.89, while Buffalo took second with a time of 1:32.98.
The Zips are back in action as they take on Ohio State and Denison at Ohio State on Friday Nov. 2, starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 3, Akron will travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State at 1 p.m.
