AKRON, Ohio – After 36 holes of the 2018 Firestone Invitational, the Akron men's golf team is tied for third in team scoring with a 5-under par 571 team total as senior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) paced the Zips with a 4-under 68 second-round effort at Firestone Country Club's North Course on Monday.

Grayson entered the second round ranked tied for 26th overall with an even-par performance on 13 par scores, an eagle and a birdie. During the second round, he climbed 21 spots on the leaderboard with 10 pars mixed with six birdies. Grayson is currently in a seven-way stalemate for fifth overall with a 72-68 – 140 (-4) tournament total.

Redshirt freshmen Beau Bayerl (Ashland, Ohio) was second in scoring for Akron and climbed three spots on the leaderboard in round two to be tied in the 12th position. Bayerl opened the day with a 71 (-1) and followed with a 2-under 70 performance for a 141 (-3) total. He collected 23 pars and eight birdies with five of those birdies coming in the second round. Â

Leading Akron's first-round scoring was junior Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), carding a 2-under 70 score. He followed with a 75 (+3) tally to finish 1-over par for the day. McFarland recorded 19 pars and eight birdies and is tied for 32nd overall.

Rounding out the Zips' team scoring were freshman Ignacio Puente (Seville, Spain) and sophomore Fabian Sunden (Sweden). Puente fired rounds of 73 (+1) and 74 (+2) for a 147 (+3), while Sunden posted 75 (+3) and 73 (+1) scores for a 148 (+4) 36-hole total.

Playing as individuals for Akron were redshirt freshman Kaleb Smith (Mansfield, Ohio) and junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.). Smith carded a 1-under par 71 first round score followed by a 77 (+6) ledger for a 148 (+4) total, and Morgan recorded a 79 (+7) tally with a 78 (+6) round for a 157 (+13) total.

Ohio overcame a three-stroke deficit to move into first place in round two. The Bobcats own a 12-under 564 score, while Connecticut follows closely in second place with a 10-under 566 ledger. Furman and Akron are tied for the third spot with 571 (-5) scores.

Winthrop's Ryan Tattan currently holds a one-stroke lead over the 90-player field after carding rounds of 69 (-3) and 68 (-4) for a 7-under 137 effort.

Play is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the par-72, 7,125-yard North Course with players teeing off in nine-minute intervals from holes No. 1 and 10. Akron is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. with Suden leading the way followed by Puente (9:24), McFarland (9:33), Bayerl (9:42), and Grayson (9:51).
