Women's Tennis Sweeps Two Road Matches

OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Akron women's tennis team picked up a pair of road wins on Friday at the SBU Fitness Center.

In morning action, Akron (3-1 overall) shut out host St. Bonaventure, 7-0, before defeating Niagara, 6-1, in the afternoon.

UA won the doubles point in both matches. At No. 1 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) claimed two wins. The duo defeated SBU's Gabriella Bowe and Kahlei Reisinger, 7-5, before beating Niagara's Stella Peisakhova/Shannon Wong, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) and freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) blanked SBU"s Dominique Mortier/Nicole Kozinski, 6-0, before capturing a 6-4 win over Niagara's Andreea Peteu and Sharlee Deshmukh.

At No. 3 doubles, junior Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) shut out SBU's Francesca Chin and Eleanor Gerhard, 6-0, before defeating Niagara's Chhinda Som and Ali Hutchison, 6-4.

"Injuries continue to make things more difficult for us, but I am extremely proud of the fight every person that played today put forth," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "Hopefully we can recover and get some players back on court as soon as possible."

In singles action against the Bonnies, Pedroso picked up her first singles win of the spring season with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 victory over Gabriella Bowe at the No. 1 position.

At No. 2 singles, Echeverry defeated SBU's Kahlei Reisinger, 6-2, 6-3, and Niagara's Andreea Peteu, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Zips return to Ohio for their home opener on Sunday, Jan. 28, with Wright State at 2 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
