AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Wright State in its home opener on Sunday at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
Â
The Raiders (2-3 overall) won the doubles point. The Zips' (3-2 overall) sole win came at No. 2 doubles as junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) stayed undefeated (3-0 this spring) with a 6-1 victory over Jillian Milano and Madison Riley.
Â
"Tough loss today as a team," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett.  "We didn't play the level of doubles that we needed to play, and as we continue to see, many matches come down to the doubles point.  We put ourselves in position to win many of the matches we lost today, and that is a positive moving forward, but we have to take our opportunities when they are presented to us."Â
Â
In singles play, Akron claimed three wins. At No. 1, sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) beat Karoline Haller un straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Â
At No. 3 singles, freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) remained unbeaten (4-0 this spring) with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Madison Riley.
Â
At No. 5, freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) fought back after dropping the first set to defeat Jillian Milano, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Â
"Wright State played a team that was picked to finish 2nd in the MAC to a 4-3 score line on Friday, and we had our chances to win this match today, with players out injured, playing injured, or sick, so we know that we have the talent and depth to compete in the MAC. Â We must now step up as a team and embrace the challenges ahead of us," Padgett added. "I'm extremely proud of the continued effort I see from this group, with so many fighting through injuries and illness. This will absolutely make us a better team moving forward."
Â
The Zips return to non-conference road play next weekend, taking on Utah State (Feb. 3) and Michigan State (Feb. 4) in East Lansing, Mich.
