Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season with 5-2 Win at Detroit Mercy

DETROIT – The University of Akron women's tennis team opened the 2017-18 spring season with 5-2 victory over host Detroit Mercy on Friday at the Franklin Athletic Club.
The Zips (1-0 overall) claimed the doubles point with two match victories. At No. 1 doubles, senior captain Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) beat freshman twins Chelsea Apawti and Jasmine Apawti, 7-5. At No. 3 doubles, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) defeated Sara Mitrakovic and Sophie Torcello, 6-4.
"Good first match of the season. We played nervous on some courts, but I expected that," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "We have many new players, and many players playing higher in the lineup than they did last year. Overall, I'm very proud of the effort seen today, and I know that we will clean up the mental and physical mistakes moving forward."
In singles action, Akron won four matches. At No. 2, Knezevich defeated Jasmine Apawti, 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 3, Uljanov won a tough battle against Torcello. 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).
At No. 5 singles, Echeverry went to three sets to beat Chelsea Apawti, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
In her first collegiate match, freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) defeated Ksenia Providokhina, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Akron travels to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jan. 20, for a 6 p.m. match at the Oxford Athletic Club.
