AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team opens the spring portion of its schedule with four road matches.
The Zips begin 2018 spring play at Detroit Mercy on Friday, Jan. 19, at Noon at the Franklin Athletic Club.
On Saturday, Jan. 20, Akron visits Pittsburgh for a 6 p.m. match at the Oxford Athletic Club.
"We are looking forward to starting the spring season," said eighth-year head coach Brandon Padgett. "We are still dealing with some injuries and need everyone to step up for us. It's a long season, and we will be relying on everyone to work hard and hopefully peak as we head into the conference portion of the season. Detroit is much improved, and I expect the match to be extremely tight on every court. Playing an ACC team is exciting for our program and will be a great experience for our young team. We will need to play at our absolute best, and I expect nothing less from our team."
This spring, Akron returns seniors Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), the 2017 MAC Player of the Year, Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas), and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio); juniors Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico); and sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal).
UA also welcomed three newcomers last fall– freshmen Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany), and Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.).
Geier and Knezevich were elected by their teammates as captains for the 2017-18 season.
