Vail, Colo. – The Akron Zips women's golf team opened the 2017 Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 311 (+23) team score on Monday.

The Zips currently rank 17th in team scoring, trailing Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas by four strokes. San Diego state leads the 18-team field, which includes 16 Top 100 programs and seven Top 50 programs, with a 289 (+1). Michigan and Pepperdine are tied for second at 290 (+2).

Freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) led Akron through the first round of the 54-hole tournament at the Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course, a 6,216-yard, par-72 Tom Fazio design.

Pikunas fired a team-best 73 (+1) first-round score, while Junior Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) and sophomore Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) followed with 78 (+6) and 79 (+7) scores, respectively. Senior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) and freshman Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) rounded out the team scoring with 81 (+9) and 89 (+17) tallies.

Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet leads the individual race with a 3-under par 69 total, followed closely by a five-way tie for the runner-up position with 2-under par 70 scores.

The second round of the 54-hole Golfweek Conference Challenge is set to begin at Noon Eastern Standard Time with tee times. Pearce is scheduled to get the round started for Akron, teeing off on hole No. 10 at 1:40 p.m., followed by Her (1:50), Wentworth (2:00), Nicholson (2:10), and Pikunas (2:20).
