AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team took the field for the first time of the fall this past week, as the Zips officially opened training camp to officially begin the 2017 pre-season.
Head coach Noreen Herlihy enters her third season at the helm of the Akron program. Under Herlihy, the Zips return 10 players, including Mid-American Conference All-Freshmen team selection, Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Joining the roster for the 2017 season are 13 incoming freshmen from around the country, including the states of Ohio (7), Michigan (2), Pennsylvania (2), New York (1), and Virginia (1).
"We are excited for the upcoming season. We have a young squad with over half the team freshmen players. We are confident they will add to the program immediately, but we have to be realistic in understanding they will have a lot to learn and will take it step by step," said Herllihy. "The returning players have done a nice job in trying to get them settled in as quickly as possible. The experience these young players will gain this season will be vital to the growth of this program moving forward. We are looking forward to seeing their progress, and the team's, this season."
Akron opens the 2017 regular season with a pair of contests on their home field of FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field against Milwaukee on Friday, Aug. 18, and then a matchup with Green Bay on Sunday, Aug. 20.
With the season approaching, senior Sydney Schipani (Pittsburgh, Pa.) said that she has high hopes for the team and the season.
"I want to be a leader for the younger players and I want to show them what it's like to be successful on and off the field," said Schipani. "As a team our goal is to get to the MAC tournament, but then make an impact on the future of the program."
Women's soccer season tickets are just $40 for general admission. Fans who have 2016 men's soccer season tickets can add a women's Family Plan for just $40 total. Discounted season tickets are available for current UA Faculty and Staff at $32. Single-game and group tickets will be available beginning in early August.
