Akron Women’s Volleyball Opens 2017 Preseason Camp

AKRON 2017 SEASON PREVIEW
AKRON, Ohio- The University of Akron volleyball team under the direction of third-year head coach Tom Hanna, officially began its 44th season of competition with its first practice of the season this past week at James A. Rhodes Arena.
"With seven newcomers on our roster I'm happy with the progress that we've made on and off the court to get them integrated into our program," said Hanna. "Our returners have done a great job of leading the way and we look forward to a solid second week and the opportunity to play outside of our gym and see someone besides ourselves across the net."
Akron returns six starters to its 2017 roster, including the Zips' top hitters from last season in redshirt junior Madi Baer (Stow, Ohio), who posted 216 kills along with 237 points last season, and junior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) with 246 kills and 262 points. Also highlighting Akron's three seniors are middle blockers Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Julie Shallman (Holt, Mich.), and defensive specialist Aubrey Kozer (Norton, Ohio).
Additionally, the Zips welcome seven newcomers in freshmen Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio), Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio), Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.), Kaylee Rogers (Parker, Colo.), Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio), Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio), and by junior setter Jelena Slijepcevic (Ruma, Serbia).
UA is less than two weeks away from its first matches of the season, opening on the road at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational on Friday, Aug. 26, in Annapolis, Md. Akron will face Navy at 7:00 p.m. The Zips close the tournament versus Maryland Eastern Shore and St. Francis (PA) at 1:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The Zips respectively, open their home campaign hosting the Akron Invitational for the 23rd year on Sept. 1-2. Tournament play opens versus Tennessee Tech battling La Salle at 4:00 p.m. followed by Akron versus Loyola at 7:00 p.m. The tournament wraps up Saturday, Sept. 2 with Akron facing Tennessee Tech and La Salle at 12:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
With 12 non-conference matches under their belt, Mid-American Conference play begins at home as the Zips face Kent State in the first meeting of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
With high expectations, the Zips look to improve upon last season's 8-20 record and 3-13 conference record.
Volleyball season tickets are just $40 for general admission. Discounted season tickets are available for current UA Faculty and Staff at $32. Special experiences are also available for group outings of 20 or more fans to any home game this season, starting at $4 per ticket. Single-game and group tickets will be available beginning in early August.
Season tickets can be purchased online at GoZips.com/tickets, by calling 1-888-99-AKRON (25766), or at the C.P. and Cornelia S. Chima Athletics Ticket Office. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
