Nashport, Ohio – After 36 holes of play at the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships, the Akron Zips are just seven shots out of the Top 5 . The Zips fired a 604 (+28) two-round total at the par 72 Virtues Golf Club that stretches 7, 243 yards.Â
Akron is currently ranked seventh overall with 36 holes left to play. The Zips fired a 303 (+15) opening round led by sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio). Appleby carded a 1-over par 73 first-round total. He started the day on a high note by recording birdie on No. 10, a 537-yard par-5, and followed with three consecutive par scores.Â
On the fifth hole of the day (No. 14), Appleby hit a rough patch recording a bogey, double bogey, and bogey. He bounced back with a birdie and par to finish the first-9 at 2-over par. Appleby played steady over the next six holes, posting four pars and two bogeys, but ended the initial 18-holes on another high note with three consecutive birdies for the 1-over effort.Â
Senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) added 76 (+4) scores in the opening round, while sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) rounded out Akron's scoring with a pair of 78 (+6) scores.Â
Kent State led the team scoring after the first round of play with a 287 (-1) tally, while Toledo (289, +1), and Ball State (294, +6) were second and third, respectively. Miami (296, +8) was ranked fourth, and Eastern Michigan and Akron were tied for fifth place.Â
During the second 18-hole round, Akron cut two stokes off its team total to finish with a 301 (+13). Grayson started out hot, recording an eagle on No. 10 en route to a 1-over par 73 second round total. Grayson climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard with seven pars, four birdies, five bogeys, a double bogey and the eagle. Grayson is currently tied for 18th overall on the leaderboard and second in team scoring for the Zips – Grayson 78-73 – 151 (+7).Â
Appleby followed in second-round scoring with a 75 (+3) on 13 pars, four bogeys, and a birdie. Appleby leads the Zips' scoring with a 148 (+4) after two rounds and ranks 13th overall. Appleby 73-75 – 148.Â
Pfeiffer remained at 23rd on the leaderboard after a second 76 (+4). He currently sits third in team scoring for the Zips with a 152 (+8) on 23 pars, nine bogeys, three birdies, and a double bogey. Pfeiffer 76-76 – 152.Â
Rounding out the second-round and team scoring were Baylis and Gollwitzer. Baylis followed his 76 (+4) opening round effort with a 78 (+6) tally. He currently ranks 29th overall with a 154 (+10), while Gollwitzer ranks 32nd overall with a 155 (+11) two-round total on 78 (+6) and 77 (+5) scores. Baylis 76-78 – 154 and Gollwitzer 78-77 – 155.
The Golden Flashes held on to the team leaderboard with an even-par 288 score, while Ball State's leads the field with a 3-under par 138 ledger.Â
Saturday's third round is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start. Akron is slated to tee off at 10:30-11:10 with Gollwitzer (10:30 a.m.) leading off followed by Baylis (10:40 a.m.), Pfeiffer (10:50 a.m.), Grayson (11:00 a.m.), and Appleby (11:10).
