Akron Finishes No. 3 in Pair of National Men's Soccer Polls

AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron men's soccer was recognized for its outstanding 2017 campaign as the Zips were ranked No. 3 nationally in the final United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 polls of the season.
Akron, who capped a run to its fifth College Cup appearance with an 18-4-2 ledger, finished behind only national champion Stanford and Indiana in the final 2017 tabulations.
The Zips were paced by 12 and 10 goals, respectively, from senior Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand) and Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England), and collectively as a team, ranked third, third, fourth, seventh, seventh, eighth, eighth and ninth, respectively, in the NCAA in total assists (54), total goals (50), total points (154), goals against average (.565), winning percentage (.792), assists per contest (2.25), points per outing (6.42) and corner kicks (6.67).
Individually, Gainford was seventh in the country in game-winning goals (5), 33rd in points per tilt (1.39), 37th in total goals (10) and 39th in goals per game (0.56) and total points (25), while Holthusen rated seventh in game-winning goals (5), 17th in total goals (12), 24th in total points (27) and 49th in goals per game (0.50). In goal, junior Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) finished the campaign ranked 10th in the NCAA in shutouts (10), 11th in goals against average (.578), 22nd in minutes played (1869:20) and 23rd in save percentage (.806).
