AKRON, Ohio – Akron Zips men's basketball program added a local product to 2018-19 Zips' hoops roster as LePear Toles (Canton, Ohio) signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Akron, head coach John Groce announced on Wednesday.
Â
"LePear is a winner as he has won at every level he has played," Groce said. "LePear has been selected as a captain at Canton McKinley, Fork Union, and State Fair, that is certainly not a coincidence."
Â
"After recruiting LePear and spending time with him, his character and leadership skills are very evident," Groce said. " As a basketball player, LePear's strength is his versatility both offensive and defensively. He has a real knack for making others better at both ends of the floor. We are excited to have LePear and his family officially become members of our community, university and men's basketball program."
Â
Toles, a 6'6" guard from Canton, Ohio, started his prep career at Timken High School and finished at Canton McKinley High School following the merger of the two schools.
Â
While at Timken, Toles garnered three consecutive All-Presidents Athletic League honors, including the All-PAC 7 Player of the Year award as a junior. In addition, he was named to the All-Ohio Special Mention squad.
Â
As a senior at McKinley, Toles averaged 16.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. He was a Third-Team All-Ohio selection and First-Team All-Federal League.
Â
In addition, the three-time First-Team Repository All-Stark County selection scored 1,331 points during his high school career to finish 25th on Stark County's all-time scoring list.
Â
After graduating high school as an academic qualifier, Toles decided to attend postgraduate school at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. During his postgrad season, Toles averaged 14.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He is currently at State Fair Community College.
Â
The Zips open the 2017-18 season on Saturday, Nov. 11, at James A. Rhodes Arena as they host the third annual Northeast Ohio Coaches vs Cancer Doubleheader. Akron is scheduled to open the event at 7 p.m. against Cleveland State, followed by the Kent State versus Youngstown State nightcap at 9 p.m.
