CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced its postseason superlatives for the 2017 women's soccer season, in which Akron's freshman goalkeeper Amani Jiu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named to the 2017 MAC All-Freshman team by the league's 12 head coaches.
Â
"Amani did a great job for us this season, especially to come in and secure the starting spot as a freshman," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "Plus, she had a freshmen defense in front of her also which adds that bit of pressure, but she handled it well and was always willing to learn. We are pleased she got recognized for her efforts."
Â
Jiu had a spectacular year for the Zips in her first season in an Akron uniform earning the starting nod between the pipes in all 19 games (1,781 minutes) in 2017.
Â
At the end of the regular season, Jiu led the conference in saves (101 overall/65 MAC), saves per game (5.32 overall/5.91 MAC), ranked tied for sixth in shutouts (4 overall/2 MAC), tied for eighth in shutouts per game overall (0.21), and ninth in MAC play (0.18).
Â
Jiu posted a pair of back-to-back shutouts, including one in MAC play against Miami and Ball State, which is the first time an Akron keeper has done so since 2011.
Â
In the NCAA, Jiu is rated sixth in minutes played (1,781), 23rd in saves (101), and 53rd in saves per game (5.32).
Â
Within the Akron women's soccer program history, Jiu is the first Zip to eclipse the 100-save mark during a single-season in program history and ranks first in single-season saves, as well as seventh-most in a keeper's career.
Â
This marks the second consecutive year the Zips have been represented on the All-Freshman team with sophomore Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) being recognized in 2016.
