Zips Break Four Pool Records in First Day of Magnus Cup Invitational

AKRON, Ohio- After the first day of competition of the Magnus Cup Invitational at Cleveland State University, the Akron swimming and diving team broke four pool records and found themselves atop the standings after the initial seven events with a score of 615.5 at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium Friday night.

The Zips' swimmers came in first-place in all six of the swimming events, while on the boards, Akron took first in the one-meter diving event. Â

Akron jumped out of the blocks quickly in the first finals round of the evening in the 200 freestyle relay The relay squad of junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio), sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), and sophomore Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio) clocked in at 1:32.06. The team of junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), and sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) came in second with a 1:33.34. Myers' lag of the event tied the pool record time for the 50 free with a 22.90 time.

In the first individual event, Myers won her first event of the night in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 28.70. Freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) followed up with a first-place finish in the 500 free (4:51.12), which put her in the top-ten fastest times of the program, along with sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Cali.) (4:53.17), which was also a top-ten time of the program.

In the 200 IM, Myers broke a 12-year-old pool record touching the wall first with a 1:58.52 which passes the old time of 1:59.67 set in 2005. UA broke another pool record of 22.90 set in 2011 in the 50 freestyle with a 22.86 time by Fazekas.

In the final swimming event of the night, Myers, Marrero Munoz, Nogaj, and Fazekas broke a pool record in the 400-medley relay in a swift time of 3:37.20. The previous record was 3:30.30 which was set in 2016 by Akron. The Akron relay team also recorded the fastest time in program history.

The Zips now hold seven records at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

Prior to the final events, the one-meter diving portion of the invitational took place. With a score of 224.75, sophomore Katelyn Applin  (Dansville, N.Y.) took first place.

The Magnus Cup Invitational continues tomorrow, Nov. 17 at 9 a.m. beginning with the preliminary rounds. The three-meter dive take place shortly following the prelims, with the finals starting at 5 p.m.
