No. 16 Akron Rifle Upends No. 13 Navy

AKRON, Ohio- The No. 16 Akron rife team came out on top with a 4,657-4,641 victory over Navy last Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Robert A. Pinn Shooting Range.

"It's like this team has no limits," said head coach Newt Engle. "Every time this team steps on the line, they start pounding the center out of the target and keep looking forward to the next shot."

The Zips dominated both competitions as Akron came out with a 2,302-2,2294 shooting score in the smallbore, and a 2,355-2,347 in the air rifle competition. The air rifle score of 2,355 smashed the old air rifle record of 2,348 which was recorded earlier this season against Kentucky.

Sophomore Kera Kaufman (Delmont, SD) was Akron's top-shooter in the smallbore competition and recorded a 579. Senior Julia Hatch (Northfield, Vt.) and freshman Wyatt Openshaw (Parkon, Md.) followed behind with a 575 and 574, respectively.

In the air rifle competition, Openshaw led the squad with a new personal-best score of 591 out of a possible 600. Also in the elite 590's was sophomore Lauryn Cinadr (Brunswick, Ohio). Three members of the squad paced the Zips with scores in the 580's. Sophomore Cierra Terrizzi (Dallastown, Pa.) completed a 588, while Kaufman and junior Rebecca Green (Coventry, Ri.) recorded a 587 score.

This weekend, the Zips travel to Cambridge, Ma as they take on MIT and John Jay College in a three-way match. The match will begin at 8:30 a.m.at the DuPont Rifle Range.
