Zips Fall 5-0 to Ohio

AKRON, Ohio – Akron and Ohio battled in a close match in the initial 45 minutes of the contest, before the Bobcats scored four goals in the second half to drop the Zips, 5-0, at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field on Sunday afternoon.

In the offensive category, the Zips recorded 11 shots as a squad. Individually, sophomore Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted a game-high six shots in 90 minutes of action, followed by sophomore Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio) who registered a pair of shots, while three other Akron players posted one shot, respectively.

The Akron netminder, freshman Amani Jiu (Brooklyn, N.Y.), made seven saves on the afternoon, increasing her season total to 69.

The Bobcats claimed a 1-0 advantage in the 7' of the match after Allie Curry bent a shot off a corner kick into the back of the net.

Schrader had an opportunity to tie the game up at the 11:24 mark of the first half with a shot on goal, but the ball was pulled in for a save by the Bobcats keeper.

O'Brien followed her teammate up in the 18' with another shot for the Zips, but her shot sailed high and out of play.

The score remained 1-0 as the Zips and Bobcats headed into the locker room. Despite trailing early, Akron possessed the ball well and aggressively pushed the ball into their offensive side of the field.

Akron posted seven shots in the second half, including three on goal, but struggled to find the back of the net, while Ohio scored four goals in the final 45 minutes of play to put the game out of reach.

The Zips are back on the road next weekend when Akron travels to northwest Ohio for a pair of matches against Toledo and Bowling Green. The Zips square off with the Rockets on Friday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. for an early evening tilt, before facing off against the Falcons on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
