Zips’ Swimming and Diving Begins Quest for Fifth MAC Championship

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron swimming and diving team begins its quest for its fifth consecutive Mid-American Conference championship, as the Zips open the 2017-18 campaign with a head-to-head dual against Youngstown State on Friday, Oct. 6, at 5 p.m. in the Ocasek Natatorium.
The Zips are led by fifth-year head coach Brian Peresie, the reigning MAC Coach of the Year. Since taking over five years ago, Peresie has turned the program around into a MAC powerhouse after winning four-straight MAC Championships.
Returning to the pool this season for the Zips are 22 letterwinners from the 2017 squad, including its five All-MAC first-team recipients, senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida Spain), juniors Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio), Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), and sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.). On the boards, Akron is led by junior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) and sophomore Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.). Complementing the Zips' returners is an incoming freshman class made up of five swimmers and a pair of divers.
Akron was predicted to finish atop of the MAC once again in the regular season. The Zips are also preseason favorites to reclaim their title at the 2018 MAC Championships.
Last season, the two teams battled against each other with Akron dominating the meet and defeating Youngstown State, 229-128. The Zips took first place in all 20 events and recorded a top-three finish in the 200 medley relay.
