Â
Junior Kayla Gwozdz (Stow, Ohio) led the Zips' offensive efforts with 16 kills, followed by senior Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wisc.), who tallied eight kills. Freshman Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) recorded 30 assists, while Akron's defense was paced by freshman Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) with 14 digs.
Â
The Zips saw their record drop to 6-16 overall and 2-8 in Mid-American Conference play, while the Chippewas improved to 11-11 overall and 3-7 in league action
Â
Central Michigan went on a 4-1 run that was finally stopped on a service error that gave the Chippewas an early 6-3 lead to start the match. The Zips offense sparked when a kill by Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) started Akron's 5-1 run that closed Central Michigan's lead to 17-14. With the Zips in position to take the lead, the Chippewas scored two-straight points that gave them a 23-18 advantage, and would take the first set victory, 25-20.
Â
With the teams tied at five early in the second set, the Zips used a 3-1 scoring run that gave them the lead, 8-6. Both teams continued to battle as the score was tied on seven separate occasions, but the Chippewas used three-consecutive scores that put them ahead, 15-13. Akron put together some offensive scoring with the help from a Central Michigan error that put the Zips down by one, 18-17, but Central Michigan pulled away with a 4-1 run that gave the Chippewas a 22-17 lead. A kill from Gwozdz and a service ace from Weigand gave the Zips hope in chance to get on top, but Central Michigan took the second set win, 25-21.
Â
Akron trailed the third set only 8-7, before Central Michigan took the lead 12-8, off of a 4-1 run. Back-to-back kills from Kloehn put the Zips in offensive position for a run, but Central Michigan answered back with two-straight points of its own, which put the team ahead 18-11. A Zips' kill from Gwozdz threatened the Chippewas defense, but the Zips were stopped after Central Michigan scored four-straight points that put them at match point, and would be completed after Central Michigan's Taylor Robertson completed the final point off of a kill.
Â
Akron was out-hit .185 percent, to Central Michigan's .330.
Â
The Zips are back on the road for a two-game road trip next weekend as they take on Ohio on Friday, Oct. 27 in Athens, Ohio for a 7 p.m. start.
