Zips Set to Commence Indoor Track Campaign at Kentucky Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron men's and women's track and field teams open their 2017 campaign this Saturday, Jan. 14, traveling to Lexington, Ky., to participate in the Kentucky Invitational.
The Zips will go against a 22-team field which includes; Akron, Arkansas State, Asbury, Ball State, Bellarmine, Berea, Cincinnati, Cumberland, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, IUPUI, Indiana Tech, James Madison, Kentucky, Kentucky State, Louisville, Marshall, Ohio State, Spalding, Tennessee State, Washington and Jefferson and Xavier.
The 34-event Kentucky Invitational will commence with competition in the women's weight throw starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, followed by the men's weight throw at 6:30 p.m. The evening will conclude with the women's and men's distance medley relays beginning at 7 p.m.
The men's and women's high kicks off action on Saturday, Jan. 14, with the meet concluding with the men's 4x400 relay at approximately 5:05 p.m.
"We are exciting to get underway as a whole team with the indoor season," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Many of our athletes have been "chomping at the bit." This will be the first time we have been to Kentucky for a meet. They have been an up-and-coming program, who have excellent facilities and they along with other teams will give us some great competition needed to help start the season off right."
The Zips enter this weekend as the top-rated Mid-American Conference women's team in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Monday, Jan. 9.
