Zips Draw 0-0 With Miami (Ohio) in MAC Opener

OXFORD, Ohio – In the 2016 Mid-American Conference season opener, the Akron women's soccer team out shot the 2015 MAC runner-up, Miami (Ohio), on goal, 6-to-4, and played to a 0-0 draw with the RedHawks on Friday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio.
"A draw on the road is a respectable result against a good team like Miami. It was a tough game, but everybody played a part and they worked extrmely hard," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "It was a game where you had to dig deep and play hard, and we did just that. We had a couple of a good looks and had some opportunities but didnt capitalize. Having said that, we are happy with the points on the road"
Akron (3-5-1, 0-0-1 MAC) totaled nine shots in the contest with six coming on frame. Sophomore Erica Schrader collected a season-high four shots, with two on goal. Freshman Amy Rogozinski (Westlake, Ohio) added three shots, all on goal, and sophomore Sydney Sleek (Wooster, Ohio) and freshman Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each recorded one shot.
Senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) boasted her first clean sheet of the year in the double-overtime contest and was a perfect 4-for-4 in saves. The shutout was Hegeman's fourth of her Akron career.
The Zips and RedHawks (3-4-1, 0-0-1 MAC) played a scoreless first half in the initial 45 minutes of the contest with Akron garnering three shots.
Rogozinski recorded two shots on goal in the sixth and 40th minutes of play. The defenseman's first shot was saved and cleared out by the RedHawks defense before it crossed into goal, while Miami's keeper Vic Maniaci saved her second shot.
At the 32:54 mark, Amato tallied a shot on goal, her sixth on the year, but Maniaci stood in for the save.
In the second half, Schrader led the offensive charge and posted a pair of shots on frame in the 61' and 78', while her third shot strayed wide of the net.
After 90 minutes had surpassed, the game was not over. The Zips and RedHawks remained scoreless and headed into overtime. Following regular time, Akron had totaled eight shots with six coming on goal.
Schrader recorded the Zips lone shot during the overtime period that was blocked by a RedHawk defender.
Hegeman made one save combined in both overtime sessions to keep her clean sheet in tact.
The Zips return to MAC action on Sunday, Sept. 25 in Muncie, Ind. The Zips will face-off with the Cardinals from Ball State at 1 p.m. at the BSU soccer complex.
