Zips Finish Ninth Overall in Season Opening Tournament

Zionsville, Ind. – The University of Akron men's golf team finished ninth at the Wolf Creek Intercollegiate, after the 54-hole tournament was cut to 36 holes due to Saturday's rainy conditions. The Zips fired a 610 (+42) 36-hole total.
After posting a 297 (+13) first round, Akron carded a 313 (+29) final round score led by a 1-over par 72 from sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio). Appleby finished his first event as a Zip tied for 39th overall with a 151 (+9) tournament total (79 (+8), 72 (+1)). Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) also recorded a 151 total on rounds of 74 (+3) and 77 (+6).
Finishing third and fourth in scoring for the Zips were sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England). Grayson went 72 (+1) and 81 (+10) -153 (+11) for 45th overall, while Baylis recorded 75 (+4) and 83 (+11), finishing 81st at 158 (+16). Senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) did not compete in final round action, posting a first round 75 (+4).
No. 2 ranked Illinois overcame an 11-stroke deficit to claim the tournament championship with a 561 (-7) two-day total. The Fighting Illini posted a 273 (-11) en route to the tournament title. Runner-up No. 41 Purdue led the field by 11 strokes after the first round, but finished with a 6-over par 574 total.
Illinois' Nick Hardy earned medalist honors with a 4-under par 138 total on a pair of 2-under 69 performances.
The Zips will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26-27, at Coldstream Golf Club for the BearCat Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
