AKRON, Ohio - The second-ranked University of Akron men's soccer team will travel to Rochester, Mich, on Monday, Aug. 15, for the first of two exhibition contests in preparation for its 2016 campaign, as the Zips battle Oakland University in a 7 p.m. tilt.
"The first few days of training with the heat have been a little bit more inconsistent than we want, but the trainings have been intense," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "Monday is for perspective of where are we at based on an opponent in Oakland, who won its conference, and will be a good measuring stick. What we're looking for as coaches is to see where we have to go and how we have to improve heading into the opener."
Oakland, who is receiving votes in the College Soccer News Preseason Top-30 poll, returns five starters from a squad that posted a 10-8-2 ledger a season ago en route to capturing the postseason Horizon League title. The Golden Grizzlies battled Dayton to a 2-2 double-overtime draw in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to the Flyers in penalty kicks, 4-3.
The return of Austin Ricci, the Golden Grizzlies' leading scorer in 2015, highlights an experienced core for Oakland. A season ago, Ricci recorded a team-high eight goals, while adding a team high two assists.
Oakland will be debuting a new goalkeeper this season as three players saw action in the Golden Grizzlies' 3-1 exhibition setback versus Bowling Green on Saturday, Aug. 13.
Akron and the Golden Grizzlies last met in the regular season on Oct. 6, 2010, when the Zips registered a 5-0 victory at Oakland.
Akron will close out its exhibition campaign on Friday, Aug. 19, as the Zips host Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. tilt at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.Â
Akron opens its regular season campaign on Aug. 26 welcoming No. 7 Georgetown to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
