CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron women's golf program placed three team members on the 2016 Women's Golf Academic All-MAC team, the Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday.
Seniors Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden) and Lesli Stolly (Lima, Ohio) as well as junior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) earned the MAC honors for excelling in the classroom and on the course. The Zips' trio was among 30 student-athletes named to this year's MAC All-Academic squad.
"I'm very happy for Frida, Lesli, and Ale to be named Academic All-MAC," head coach Jenny King said. "All three ladies have a passion for learning in their academic field and the game of golf. They work extremely hard in the classroom and on the course."
Fougberg, a corporate finance major, earned her second Academic All-MAC honor and has appeared on the Dean's List four times in her academic career with one semester remaining. She maintained a 3.306 GPA while playing in all 10 events this season.
Fougberg was the Zips' low-scorer in four-out-of-nine stroke play tournaments while averaging 76.42 strokes per round and capturing her first collegiate win at the MAC Fall Preview. At that event, she set Akron's all-time lowest single-round score with a career-best 3-under par 69 performance. Fougberg posted two of the top-three 54-hole round totals of the season for the Zips, including the lowest 220 (+4) and a 221 (+5). She closed the season with five Top 10 finishes and two MAC Golfer of the Week awards.
Stolly, an exercise science physiology major, received her first Academic All-MAC award. She maintained a 3.404 GPA, earning five Dean's List appearances in her academic career with one semester left.
Stolly appeared in 6-of-10 events this season for the Zips, posting an 85.19 scoring average over 16 rounds. She finished 17th overall at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational and carded a season-low 78 (+6) single-round score at the Murray State Invitational.
Velasco-Villanueva, a corporate finance major, also received her first Academic All-MAC honor. She has two appearances on the Dean's List with a team-high 3.589 GPA.
Velasco-Villanueva appeared in all of the Zips' 10 events this season, posting an 81.73 scoring average over 26 rounds. She recorded a season-low and career-best 74 (+2) at the MAC Fall Preview and won 2-of-3 head-to-head matches at the MAC Match Play Challenge. She posted winning scores of 4&2 and 1-up before falling 1-down in the final round.
"My goal as a coach is to ensure that every student-athlete in our program is a well-rounded individual at the end of their four years," King said. "Both, Frida and Lesli have certainly accomplished that and Ale is well on her way."
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
