Zips Women's Soccer Releases 2016 Schedule
May 12 | Women's Soccer
AKRON, Ohio – The 2016 Akron women's soccer schedule, one which includes seven regular season home games and 12 road matches against quality opponents, was announced by second-year head coach Noreen Herlihy on Thursday.
"We are excited for the upcoming season," said Herlihy. "We will have 14 new players joining us so we will be excited to get everyone up to speed as soon as possible. We have a tough opening stretch with our first five games on the road, but we welcome the challenge as part of our growth as we look to move the program forward. Obviously, we will be a very young team, but we will have a fearless mindset, and everyone is excited to get out on the training ground and get started in August."
The Zips will host one exhibition contest before the start of the regular season at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field against St. Francis University on Aug. 14.
Akron kicks off its regular season with a five-game road swing starting in Wisconsin where the Zips will be challenged by Milwaukee (Aug. 19) and Green Bay (Aug. 21).
The following weekend Akron travels to Indiana for a pair of first-ever encounters with Indiana State (Aug. 26) from the Missouri Valley Conference and Butler (Aug. 28) of the Big East Conference. The Bulldogs were a 2015 NCAA Tournament participant.
Akron then closes out its season-opening five-game road trip battling Cleveland State (Sept. 4). A year ago, the Zips defeated the Vikings, 4-2, on Sept 1, 2015.
Akron opens its 2016 home campaign on Sept. 8 as the Zips welcome Robert Morris to FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet field. A showdown with UC Riverside on Sept. 11 closes out the homestand for Akron.
The non-conference portion of the Zips' schedule comes to a close on Sept. 16, with a road trip to Pittsburgh, Pa., to go head-to-head with Duquesne. The Dukes captured the 2015 Atlantic 10 Tournament title a year ago earning a berth in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Just as the Zips opened the regular season, Akron begins Mid-American Conference play with a two game road trip against Miami (Sept. 23) and Ball State (Sept. 25).
MAC play at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field commences with three straight contests on Akron's home turf. Akron plays host to Toledo (Sept. 30) and Bowling Green (Oct. 2).
A mid-week game between the Zips and cross-town rival Kent State will round out the homestand for Akron on Oct. 6.
Akron returns to the road on for a three-game set beginning with a contest against Ohio (Oct. 9), before heading to Northern Illinois (Oct. 14) and Western Michigan (Oct. 16) the following weekend. The Broncos were a 2015 NCAA Tournament participant after winning the 2015 MAC Tournament title.
The 2016 regular season home campaign comes to a close with a pair of tilts against Central Michigan (Oct. 20), and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 23).
The Zips round out their regular season visiting Buffalo, N.Y., to square off versus Buffalo (Oct. 27).
The quarterfinal round 2016 MAC tournament is slated to begin at campus sites on Oct. 30th, followed by the semifinals (Nov. 4) and championship game (Nov. 6).
The Zips return 14 letterwinners from the 2015 squad; including second team All-MAC goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.), as well as welcoming 14 newcomers to the roster in the fall.
