HAMILTON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team gave up a 5-2 decision to Miami (Ohio) in Mid-American Conference play on Sunday afternoon indoors at the Riverside Athletic Club.
With the loss, Akron fell to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in conference action while the Redhawks improved to 8-9 on the season and 3-1 in the MAC.
"I am certainly disappointed in today's outcome," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We came out flat in doubles, and that carried over into some of our singles play as well. Ari and Sophia continue to play at a high level consistently, which is great but we have to play better collectively if we want to have a serious opportunity to contend in the MAC."
Akron fell in doubles action but was able to claim two victories in singles play. Sophomore Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) competed against Miami's No. 1 player, Anzhelika Shapovalova, to seize a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory. With the win, Blinova now stands at 19-1 in dual matches and a flawless 6-0 in league contests.
At No. 2 singles, fellow sophomore Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) grabbed a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 triumph versus the Redhawks' Hannah Shteyn. Geier holds a 16-5 mark overall and a 5-1 record in conference play.
Akron closes out the home portion of Mid-American Conference competition against Buffalo on Saturday, April 16 at 11:30 a.m. Lone senior Martina Zerbola will be honored before the match.
