Zerbola Clinches Deciding Point in 4-3 Victory Over Buffalo

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team closed out the home portion of its regular season with a 4-3 Senior Day win over Buffalo in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday at the Outdoor Tennis Facility.
The Zips improved to 14-9 overall and 4-3 in the MAC, while the Bulls fell to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Prior to the match, seniors Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and Madison Cohen (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) were honored.
"Today was a great day for Zips tennis," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "It was senior day for Madison and Martina, and it could not have finished in a more fitting way with Martina clinching the match for us!"
Akron started the morning off strong after claiming the doubles point with two victories against UB. Sophomore Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) and junior Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) captured a 6-4 triumph over Buffalo's No. 1 duo of Tanja Stojanovska and Dayana Agasieva. At No. 3 doubles, Zerbola paired with junior Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) defeated Laura Holterbosch and Christine Haraldson, 6-1.
Blinova seized her 11th consecutive match and 20th singles dual match of the season, beating Stojanovska 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) took down UB's Mercedes Losada Rubio, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles before Zerbola was able to give Akron the victory with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 decision over Haraldson at the No. 6 spot.
"This was a total team effort from start to finish, and I could not be more proud of this wonderful group of young ladies," Padgett finished. "We still have work to do, but I am confident that we will come ready to play next Friday at Bowling Green."
Akron finishes the regular season on the road against Bowling Green Friday, April 22. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Keefe Courts on the BG campus.
