Akron Finishes Second at UC Bearcat Spring Classic, Three Zips Place in Top 10

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. – The Akron Zips women's golf team finished the UC Bearcat Spring Classic second overall, firing a final round 316 (+28) at the Mission Inn Resort and Country Club's El Campeon Golf Course on Sunday.
The Zips completed the 54-hole event with a 945 (+81) effort as three Zips placed in the Top 10 led by freshman Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio), who finished in a three-way tie for fourth overall, 230 (+14). Sophomore Pader Her (Holt, Mich.), 231 (+15), and senior Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden), 233 (+17), followed with seventh and 10th place finishes, respectively.
"The golf course was set up very tough this week," head coach Jenny King said. "I thought we battled hard everyday, and really pleased with how we stayed patient down the stretch. We really feel like this tournament has made us better."
Her fired the Zips lowest final-round score, 75 (+3), while recording 10 pars, four bogeys, three birdies, and a double-bogey. On the final day of competition, Her climbed seven spots on the leaderboard while Fougberg moved up four spots. Fougberg followed with Akron's second-best final round score, 77 (+5), carding 10 pars, five bogeys, two birdies, and a double-bogey.
After leading the field for the first two rounds of play, Nicholson was third in team scoring with an 81 (+9) to finish in the Top 5. She recorded nine pars, seven bogeys, a triple and a birdie.
Rounding out the Zips' scoring were freshman Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) and junior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico). Dull finished tied with a 248 (+32) while Velasco-Villanueva finished 93rd overall with a 268 (+52)
Senior Lesli Stolly (Lima, Ohio), playing as an individual, withdrew from the final round due to an injury.
The hosts, Cincinnati, held on to the No. 1 spot by carding a tournament-best 303 (+15) final-round to finish 929 (+65) overall. The Bearcats' Tara Liebert captured medalist honors with a 1-under par 71 18-hole score and 221 (+5) tournament tally.
The women's golf team returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, at Miller Memorial Golf Course for the Murray State Invitational Miller in Murray, Ky.
