CLERMONT, Fla. – Akron softball out hit Morgan State 10-to-4 but left seven runners on base as the Zips (0-5) close out the Dot Richardson Invitational with a 4-2 loss to the Bears on Sunday morning in Clermont, Fla.
"We had a very disappointing start, we did not play well and we did not look like the team that I saw practice last week," said head coach Julie Jones. "We are going to go home, we are going to work on things that we weren't very good at, and expect to come out looking very different next Friday."
Three Zips recorded multi-hit performances. Junior Carley Childress (Belkanp, Ill.) went 3-for-3, freshman Kelly Hysong (Canton, Ohio) and sophomore Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) went 2-for-4 each.
Morgan State (1-4) put three runs on the board early in the second inning. The Bears loaded the bases and a double brought in two runs. The third run scored after a fielding error for an unearned run.
Junior Anna Tarpley (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off the top of the fourth inning with an infield single. Sophomore Taylor Kirian (New Riegel, Ohio) moved Tarpley over on a sacrifice bunt and Childress followed with an infield single allowing to Tarpley advance to third on the throw. Freshman Gabrielle Fredericks (New Philadelphia, Ohio) came in to pinch hit and grounded out to the pitcher, but Tarpley ran on contact and scored from third.
The Bears tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly to left field.
Akron attempted a comeback in the seventh inning scoring one more run but that is all they would get. Childress led of the inning with a single and moved over to second on a sac bunt. Junior Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) smacked a single advancing Childress to third base. Hysong singled for the second time in the game driving home Childress.
In the circle for the Zips, senior Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) recorded her best outing of the weekend. Seiler went the distance throwing six innings while giving up just four hits and fanned eight.
The Zips travel to Greenville, S.C., next weekend, Feb. 25-27, to compete in the Furman/Upstate tournament. Akron will face off against Savannah St., Furman, and S.C. Upstate.
