Zips Soccer Drops 4-1 Result to Ohio
October 09 | Women's Soccer
ATHENS, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team struggled to find an offensive rhythm as the Zips fall to Ohio, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Five Akron players posted a shot each on the afternoon and senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) recorded six saves in the contest.
The Zips had a pair of opportunities early in the contest that were turned away by the Ohio keeper. Freshmen Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio) and Amy Rogozinski (Westlake, Ohio) each posted a shot on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
Ohio claimed a 1-0 advantage in the 35' of the contest. Alexis Milesky chipped a ball over the defenders heads to the foot of Allie Curry who went left post for the score.
The Bobcats converted on a called penalty inside the box on the Zips at the 37:49 mark when Meghan Niebuhr beat Hegeman on a penalty kick to increase their lead, 2-0.
Despite trailing 2-0, Akron continued to be aggressive and push the ball forward. After subbing in during the 39', freshman Chloe Allen (Novi, Mich.) quickly got to work. Allen possessed the ball inside the midfield and dribbled up into the offensive third. The forward laced a shot on goal and past the Bobcats keeper to the right at the 40:17 mark. The score was the freshman's sixth of the year.
Senior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) had a chance to tie up the game at two at the 67:04 mark. Sivic tallied a shot on frame but the OU goalie was able to stand tall for the save.
OU again took a two goal lead, 3-1, in the 68 minute when Alivia Milesky found Sydney Leckie inside the box and she was able to score to the left side of the net.
The Bobcats put the game out of reach increasing its lead to 4-1 in the 84'. Bryce Hueber rebounded a shot that was deflected off a save by Hegeman and scored on a shot from 22-yards out to the lower right post.
Senior Karin Norman (Stocksund, Sweden) registered a shot in the final minute of the contest but again the Bobcats goalie was there to make the play.
Akron returns to the pitch on Oct. 14, when the Zips go head-to-head with Northern Illinois in Dekalb, Ill.
